Why the Long D9

The cheapest way into a real longtail

Bosch Cargo Line, 85 Nm, 400% assist. Rated to carry two kids on the back with a 198 lb rack load and a 419 lb gross vehicle weight. For $3,499 that is a lot of bike.

The same drive unit as a GSD P10

This is the identical Bosch Cargo Line that Tern puts in the GSD P10 and the P00. Same 85 Nm, same 400% assist, same Bosch System 2 platform with a Purion display. You are not buying a smaller motor here. You are buying less bike around the same motor, for fifteen hundred less than the P10.

Two GSDs do run a different one. The S10 and R14 use the Smart System Cargo Line, which adds the app, eBike Alarm, GPS tracking and over the air updates, and whose batteries and chargers do not swap with System 2. That is a platform difference, not a power difference.

What else Tern left off, and why it is fine

A chain drivetrain, a custom Tektro nine speed, and a rigid aluminum cargo fork. No belt, no suspension, no ABS.

None of that stops it doing the school run. A chain wants oil twice a season. A rigid fork on 20 inch Super Moto-X tires is not harsh, because the tires are doing the work. You are trading maintenance and gadgets for fifteen hundred dollars.

Where it gives ground to a GSD

One 500 Wh battery, and no second bay. The GSD P10 takes a second pack and roughly doubles its day. If your commute is long or hilly, that matters more than anything else on this list.

The GSD also carries more, 463 lb gross and a 220 lb rack against 419 and 198 here, and it folds and parks vertically. The Quick Haul Long does not fold.

The P10 is $4,999 during the current Tern sale. If the extra fifteen hundred is not there, buy this one and do not feel bad about it. It carries the same two kids.

What’s on it

Bosch Cargo Line, 85 Nm, 400% assist, with the Purion display. Bosch PowerPack 500 Wh. Custom Tektro 1×9 drivetrain on a KMC chain. Rigid aluminum cargo fork, DIN 79010 certified. 20 inch wheels on Tern x Schwalbe Super Moto-X tires. 419 lb gross vehicle weight, 198 lb rear rack, 265 lb max rider. 64.6 lb.

Fit it out here

Two kids on the back means a Clubhouse and seat pads, and we fit those in the shop rather than shipping you a box. Come in with the kids and we will size it with them on it.
