Why the P5i (Gen 2)
One kid, no maintenance, and it fits in a hallway
The HSD P5i is the simplest bike in the Gen 2 range. A Shimano Nexus 5 speed internal hub on a Gates carbon belt. Five clean gears, nothing exposed, no oil, no indexing, nothing to bend in a bike rack. Twist and go.
Bosch Performance Line on the Smart System, 75 Nm, 340% assist, with a 545 Wh battery. Class 1, so assist stops at 20 mph.
The P5i or the S11, at the same price
The HSD S11 is also $4,499 and it is the same frame, the same battery, the same 397 lb capacity and the same fold. The difference is speed and drivetrain. The S11 is a Class 3 bike that assists to 28 mph on an 11 speed chain. This one is Class 1 at 20 mph on a belt and a sealed hub.
So the question is not which is better. It is whether you want to go faster or maintain less. If your ride is short, in traffic, in all weather, and you never want to think about the drivetrain, take the P5i. If you are covering real distance and want to keep up with cars, take the S11.
What it does that a normal bike does not
It folds down small and it parks vertically, on its back end, against a wall. In a Providence apartment or a triple decker hallway that is the difference between owning a cargo bike and not.

Features
Stronger, Stiffer Frame
The HSD frame is now 15% stronger at the head tube and 39% at the bottom bracket. The enhanced stiffness means more stability under load, with less wobble or sway. A stiffer frame also means better handling, making it easier to maneuver in tight spaces, while helping to absorb vibrations and bumps on the road.
Heavy-Duty Rack Design
With a capacity rated to 80 kg (176 lb), the versatile HSD Atlas H Rack makes it easier to ride more and drive less. The rack easily fits a child seat, and is strong and spacious enough to accommodate an adult-passenger or larger cargo. Take on bigger tasks, carry larger passengers, and set off on more adventures.
Cargo-Carrying Versatility
Carry up to 20 kg (44 lb) of extra cargo by installing one of the many compatible cargo-carrying accessories onto the burly, frame-mounted Combo Mount. Switch between bags, baskets, and racks. Carry more cargo up front when there is a passenger behind. All cargo weight is carried by the frame, without interfering with steering.
