Tern HSD P10e Sport (Gen 3): the do-everything bike that fits in your hallway

The HSD has always been our answer for people who want a cargo bike without the cargo bike footprint. The new Gen 3 P10e Sport just makes that answer a lot better.
It hauls a kid, a week of groceries, or a very good dog, up to 419 lbs of total load, on a bike that’s shorter than a normal one and folds flat to live in a hallway, a closet, or the back of your car. One HSD fits your whole household too. The cockpit adjusts tool-free from riders 4’11” to 6’9″, so you and your partner can share the same bike without a wrench.
What’s new on Gen 3 is worth caring about. The frame is stiffer where it counts (15% at the head tube, 39% at the bottom bracket), so it feels planted under a heavy load instead of wobbly. It runs the full Bosch Smart System, which means the eBike Flow app, over-the-air updates, and eBike Lock built in. Add a Flow+ subscription and you get GPS tracking and an alarm, handy if you park it anywhere but your living room.
The Sport part is the drivetrain and the assist. You get a Class 3 Bosch Performance Line Sport motor with 90 Nm of torque, so 28 mph and hills stop being a negotiation. It’s paired with TRP E.A.S.I. electronic 10-speed shifting that can shift for you automatically. In stop-and-go traffic with a kid on the back, having one less thing to think about is not a gimmick. It’s a real upgrade. The 545 Wh Bosch battery is good for up to 67 miles, and it comes ready to ride with fenders, a rack, and lights.

One more thing. Tern only sells the HSD through authorized shops, and there’s a reason for that. An e-bike carrying your kid needs to be built and tuned by someone who knows what they’re doing, and it needs a shop to come back to. That’s us. The 90 Nm is a free software update

This motor leaves the factory at 85 Nm and 600 W. Bosch’s Performance Upgrade takes it to 90 Nm and 700 W and costs nothing. You install it yourself in the Bosch Flow app, over the air. No service appointment, nothing we have to plug in.

There are two upgrades and they get mixed up constantly, including on spec sheets. The Performance Upgrade is the one that gives you 90 Nm. Performance Upgrade 2.0 is a separate, later one that raises low speed assist to as much as 600 percent and adds no torque at all. If a bike has never been updated, it is still an 85 Nm bike no matter what the listing says.

The honest trade, and Bosch says this themselves: higher settings mean more wear and less range, and you notice it first on the chain and sprockets. You set the values per riding mode, so you can run it hard when you want it and dial it back for a long day. Assist still cuts at 28 mph either way, so it stays a Class 3 bike.

Worth knowing if you are cross shopping: this is the BDU347Y Performance Line Sport. There is an older motor sold under the same Performance Sport name, the BDU338Y, that makes 75 Nm and gets no torque upgrade at all. Same words on the page, different motor. Ask us in the shop and we will show you where the code is.

Ride one on Brook Street

It locks itself

This is a Bosch Smart System bike, so eBike Lock is built in. Walk away with your phone and the motor will not assist anyone else. Add Flow+ and you get an alarm and GPS tracking too, which matters if you park it outside a school or a Brown building instead of your living room.

Lights, fenders and the rack are already on it

Nothing to add before the first ride. The rear rack takes 176 lb, which is a kid seat, a kid, and a week of groceries. The whole bike is rated to 419 lb.

Shorter than a normal bike, and it stands on end

The HSD is not long. It folds flat in about five seconds and parks vertically against a wall, so it lives in a hallway or a closet. The cockpit adjusts without tools for riders from 4’11” to 6’9″, so one bike can serve the whole house.
