Why the R14
The off road one with nothing exposed
Rohloff E-14, fourteen sealed gears with a 526% range, on a Gates CDX belt. No derailleur hanging off the back to catch a rock, no chain to pack with mud, nothing to index after a wet ride. On a bike built to leave pavement, that is not a luxury, it is the point.
What it is for
Fire roads, trailheads and gravel with a real load on the back. Bosch Performance Line CX on the Smart System, 85 Nm, 340% assist, with an 800 Wh battery and a second bay ready to fill. Around here that is Lincoln Woods, the unpaved sections along the Blackstone, and getting a weekend of gear to the water without a car.
The honest comparison
The Orox S12 is $2,000 less and gives you the same motor, the same frame and the same capacity with a Shimano 12 speed chain instead of the Rohloff and belt, and a 725 Wh battery instead of 800.
If you ride it a few times a season in dry weather, take the $2,000. If you ride it year round, in mud, loaded, and you are tired of drivetrains, this is the one that stops costing you Saturdays.
And if you are honest with yourself that you are staying on pavement, neither Orox is your bike. At 83 lb on four inch tires this is hard work in the city. Look at the GSD range instead, where the P00 gives you a belt and a stepless hub for $5,999.
