Why the C8 Elite

The Arroyo that costs less and shifts more

The C8 sits at the bottom of the Arroyo Elite range and the trade is straightforward. You give up motor, you gain gears, and you save five hundred dollars against the C5.

What you give up

Bosch Active Line Plus, 50 Nm. The C5 Elite and the C380 Elite both run Performance Line at 75 Nm. On flat ground that gap is smaller than the number suggests. Coming up Hope Street with a week of groceries, you will feel it.

It also runs a chain rather than the Gates belt on the C5 and C380. A chain wants cleaning and lubing. A belt does not.

What you get back

Eight gears in a sealed Shimano Nexus hub instead of five. Wider spread, finer steps, and all of it shifts at a standstill, because it is a hub and not a derailleur. Same 540 Wh battery as the more expensive Arroyos, which is where the range comes from. Gazelle quotes up to 94 miles in eco.

Who it’s for

Errands, the commute, the bike path. Someone who wants a proper Bosch city bike with real brakes and real suspension and does not need to climb College Hill loaded twice a day. If you do, spend the five hundred on the C5 Elite and take the bigger motor and the belt.
